Rare Australian Gaspeite Pendant in 925 Sterling Silver – Ed Lohman

Gaspeite is one we don’t come across very often, and that’s a big part of why we like it. The bright yellow-green to apple-green color is unusual all by itself, but this piece also has quite a bit of the natural brown matrix running through it. Ed worked with that variation rather than cutting around it, then carried the Gaspeite into the inlay bale at the top.

Geologically, Gaspeite is a rare nickel carbonate mineral. It was first described from the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec, Canada, which is where it gets its name. Unlike turquoise, which gets its color largely from copper, Gaspeite owes its distinctive green color to nickel. It forms in nickel-rich environments and is found in only a handful of places around the world, with notable gem material also coming from Western Australia (that's where this one came from)

For anyone who collects unusual stones, Gaspeite is a fun one to have simply because there isn't a lot of it around.
