Natural Persian Turquoise Pendant in 925 Sterling Silver – Ed Lohman

Persian turquoise has been prized for thousands of years, and when you see a piece with this kind of blue, it’s pretty easy to understand why. This stone has that strong, clear blue Persian turquoise is famous for, with just a little natural matrix around the edges. Ed kept the center of the design fairly open so you get a lot of uninterrupted turquoise.

Persian turquoise has a history that goes back well before modern jewelry making. Some of the best-known deposits are in Iran, where turquoise has been mined and used in jewelry, decorative objects, and architecture for centuries. Historically, particularly fine blue turquoise from this region became a standard against which turquoise from other parts of the world was compared.

The geology is interesting too. Turquoise is a hydrated copper aluminum phosphate that forms when mineral-rich water moves through fractures and porous rock in dry environments. Copper contributes the blue color, while differences in the surrounding rock and other minerals can leave behind the matrix you see in natural stones.
