Mother of Pearl Dragonfly Pendant & Earring Set in Sterling Silver – Ed Lohman

$476.00

There’s a lot more work in this little dragonfly set than you notice at first. Ed built the pendant and matching earrings from sterling silver, then individually cut and fitted all of those tiny pieces of Mother of Pearl into the wings and bodies. Look closely, and you’ll see soft blues, silvery white, pink and purple, with a few darker sections mixed in. The colors change quite a bit depending on how the light hits them. (Make sure to look at all photos! They are in different lighting so you can see the difference!)

Mother of Pearl is the iridescent inner layer of certain mollusk shells, also called nacre. It forms as incredibly thin layers of calcium carbonate and organic material build up inside the shell. Light interacts with those layers rather than simply reflecting off the surface, which is what creates the shifting colors Mother of Pearl is known for.

Ed used that natural variation really well in these dragonflies. Instead of cutting everything from one uniform section, he worked with different colors and pieces of shell to create the pattern across each wing. Every tiny section had to be cut, shaped, and fitted into the sterling silver individually.

The pendant and earrings were made together as a complete set, entirely by Ed Lohman.
