Natural Crazy Lace Agate Pendant in 925 Sterling Silver – Mexican “Happy Lace”

This one has a completely different look from the other Crazy Lace pieces. There’s a strong rusty orange running right through the middle, surrounded by layer after layer of gray, cream, white, brown, and just a little soft pink. The bands get incredibly fine in places, then open up into larger pockets and patterns toward the bottom. It’s a really good example of why I never get tired of cutting agate.

Crazy Lace Agate comes from Chihuahua, Mexico, and is known for the complicated banding that gave it its name. It formed as silica-rich fluids moved through openings in volcanic rock, depositing thin layers of chalcedony over and over again. Changes in mineral content during that process produced the different colors, while each new period of growth added another line to the pattern.

Crazy Lace is also commonly called “Happy Lace” or the “Laughter Stone.” In metaphysical traditions, it’s associated with joy, emotional balance, protection, and a more positive outlook. Whether or not that's your thing, the natural geology is pretty remarkable on its own.

This is a larger stone, and the simple .925 sterling silver setting was exactly what it needed. There’s very little competing with the cabochon, so you get to see the entire pattern from the gray banding at the top all the way down to those earthy mineral pockets at the bottom.
