Fossil Gem (Dino) Bone Sterling Silver Pendant with Inlay Bale | Ed Lohman Collection

This one started out as an actual dinosaur bone. After the animal died and the bone was buried, mineral-rich groundwater slowly moved through its tiny pores and spaces. Over millions of years, minerals filled and replaced portions of the bone while preserving its internal structure. That process is what turned it into the material collectors call dinosaur gembone.

And that’s the really interesting part of this stone. The little cells, webbing, and irregular shapes you see across the surface aren't just a pattern; they’re remnants of the bone's original structure. Different minerals filled those spaces during fossilization, which is why dinosaur bone can vary so much in color and appearance from one piece to another.

This material came from the American West, and Ben Davis cut and polished the cabochon to leave as much of that cellular pattern visible as possible. Ed Lohman then built the .925 sterling silver setting and made the matching dinosaur bone inlay bale. It’s a fairly substantial piece, but the silverwork stays around the edges so you still get a really good look at the fossil.

We work with a lot of interesting rocks and minerals, but there’s something pretty cool about knowing this one actually started as part of an animal millions of years ago.
